Constables are responsible for, among other things, directing traffic during emergencies and parades and maintaining decorum at an election site. Depending on the state they are based in, the most elementary function of a police constable is to protect law and order. While discharging this broad duty, the constable can carry out many different kinds of work, from attending emergencies to controlling inmates in jails.
